LUMIFLON ™ fluoropolymer coating
is a class of fluoropolymer based on vinyl ethers and fluoroethylenes. Developed by Asahi Glass in 1982, LUMIFLON™ it is the first solvent soluble fluoropolymer coating that can be cured under room temperature conditions.
LUMIFLON™ ultra-weatherable fluoroploymer coating contains a unique polymer structure offering protection to concrete and steel from sunshine, wind, rain and corrosion caused by water, oxygen, chloride and even acid rain. The durability of the coatings is results form the outstanding UV stability, chemical and corrosion resistance derived from the extreme stability of the carbon-fluorine bond in LUMIFLON™ resins.
Research has revealed that LUMIFLON™ fluoropolmer coatings are capable of providing 30 years weathering and corrosion protection when applied to aluminium, fibreglass, concrete and polycarbonate. The use of fluoropolymer topcoats can increase the effective life of bridge coating systems for example by 30 years, and in certain conditions even 60 years.
Because of its unique chemical make-up, coatings made with LUMIFLON™ are also easier to clean than non LUMIFLON™ based coatings.
With such superior weatherability, LUMIFLON™ ensures a longer life on building exteriors and facades, resulting in less need for repainting and a substantial decrease in life cycle costs compared to other coatings on the market today.
The application of LUMIFLON™ fluoropolymer resins enable a variety of finishes, from matte to high gloss. With the LUMIFLON™ resin being thermoset and soluble, superior pigment compatibility enables a broad palette of colours to be utilised. This is in addition to outstanding UV stability.
LUMIFLON™ is also able to offer fabricators a choice between shop application or on site application due its ability to be either heat cured or cured at ambient temperature. As a result LUMIFLON resins have been produced by paint manufacturers around the world and have found a wide variety of uses from coating bridges to aircraft and automobiles.
The use of LUMIFLON™ resins can substantially reduce life cycle costs, including maintenance, replacement and recoating costs. Based on comparitive testing the life cycle cost of LUMIFLON™ was the cheapest compared to all other systems, such as alkyd, polyurethane and chlorinated rubber.
LUMIFLON™ is available as solvent, emulsion and powder form.
